Adapters matter more on a scope than they look like they should. The BNC connector at the input is a mechanical part on an instrument that gets moved, and a worn or loose connector shows up as intermittent signal, noise on the trace, or a channel that reads nothing — symptoms that are easy to mistake for a fault in the circuit under test.

Keeping a spare is also what lets you adapt between connector types when a probe or a test lead does not match the input directly.
